Maths 

Intent

At Sholden C of E Primary, we believe that maths is a skill we use on a daily basis and is an essential part of everyday life. Therefore, mathematics forms an important part of our broad and balanced curriculum where we endeavour to ensure that children develop an enjoyment and enthusiasm for the subject, as well as fulfil their God given potential.

We also believe that unlocking mathematical fluency, confidence and competence in maths produces secure knowledge and understanding that can be used as a vital foundation for future learning.

In line with the National Curriculum Objectives for Mathematics, our intent is that all pupils become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.

Along with delivering a high-quality, clear and progressive curriculum, our aim is to develop a positive culture of deep understanding through reasoning mathematically, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language. We offer progression within fluency, reasoning and problem solving and in turn aim for children to become true masters of content, applying and being creative with new knowledge in multiple ways.

We provide opportunities for children to challenge themselves, to develop communication skills, independence and co-operation when solving problems in order to take responsibility for their learning. This in turn will equip children with learning behaviours that will support them into their adult life.
